One of the standout sessions was delivered by Lasalle fashion lecturer Dino Augusto, who introduced the concept of Sarah Lazarovic's Buyerarchy of Needs. Inspired by Maslow's hierarchy, the Buyerarchy of Needs is a pyramid that challenges consumer habits and urges us to prioritise using what we already have before buying something new. At the base of the pyramid is 'use what you have', followed by steps such as borrowing, swapping and saving, with 'make' and 'buy' at the top. Dino passionately explained how the current fast-fashion model encourages over-consumption, and how the Buyerarchy provides a practical framework for slowing down and making thoughtful decisions. This idea resonated with many participants, myself included, as it reminded us that sustainability does not start with what we buy, but how we value and use what we already have.

The festival also featured workshops that brought sustainability to life through creativity. In Kunang Jewelry’s Upcycled Jewelry workshop, participants transformed clothing and plastic waste into unique, eco-friendly accessories.

Anfi Fashion and Junior hosted a Styling Class, teaching attendees how to elevate their personal style while embracing sustainable fashion principles. 

API Institute’s eco-printing workshop was a favorite among nature lovers, offering techniques to create stunning fabric designs using upcycled materials. 

Meanwhile, Bobbinhood introduced an eco-friendly approach to screen printing, helping participants breathe new life into their old clothes and proving that fashion can indeed be slowed down and reimagined.

A key highlight of the event was the Sustainable Fashion Show, organized by stylist Junior and Nadila. The runway was filled with stunning creations made from upcycled, repurposed, and eco-friendly materials, demonstrating that sustainable fashion can be both stylish and responsible. Junior and Nadila’s curated collections showcased how fashion can be reinvented through creativity and conscious choices.

As part of the décor team from The Saturday Corner, I was privileged to contribute to the festival’s creative atmosphere. Staying true to the event's mission, we designed the venue using 95% repurposed fabric waste. From vibrant fabric installations to functional decorations, every element was carefully curated to showcase the potential of upcycling. Being involved in this project was deeply fulfilling, as it allowed us to transform discarded materials into something beautiful, functional, and meaningful. It also underscored the idea that sustainability isn’t just a concept, it’s a practice that can be applied to everything, even event design.

The Clothes Swap Party was another festival highlight, providing a fun and practical way for attendees to refresh their wardrobes without contributing to the fashion industry's waste problem. Over 1,300 clothing items were collected, and 358 of them found new homes during the swap. Watching people light up as they found “new-to-them” treasures was inspiring and emphasized the joy and value of reusing and sharing.

The festival’s impact extended far beyond the activities of the day. With more than 950 participants joining the movement, the event generated less than 30kg of waste, a remarkable achievement for an event of this scale. It was proof that when creativity, community, and purpose come together, real change is possible.

For me, the Sustainable Fashion Fest wasn’t just an event, it was a call to action. The inspiring talks, hands-on workshops, and collaborative efforts made me rethink my own habits and reminded me of the power of collective effort. Whether it’s choosing to repair instead of replace, swapping instead of buying, or simply appreciating what we already own, every small step contributes to a bigger, more sustainable picture.

This festival marked an important milestone in advocating for a conscious approach to fashion. It wasn’t about perfection but progress, encouraging everyone to start where they are and do what they can. Hai, taking on a 101 km grand fondo two weeks ago felt like a rite of passage. Bali has this way of challenging you, especially when you’re on the road before dawn, knowing you’ve got hours ahead. The idea of pushing through those kilometers, dealing with the heat and the climbs, was intimidating but also a goal I couldn’t shake off.

I started at 5:13 AM in Sanur, meeting up with my friend while the streets were still empty. Those early kilometers felt like a warm-up; we kept a steady pace, passing through Pemogan at 10 km by 5:37 AM. As we got closer to Jimbaran at 20 km, the sky began to lighten, and we could see more of the road ahead. The energy was good, and the early morning air made it feel manageable.

By 30 km, we reached Nusa Dua, where we decided to take our first break. It was only 7:03 AM, but it already felt like we’d been going for a while. A few minutes to stretch, some water, and we were off again. By Tuban at the 40 km mark, it was time for breakfast. 

A simple bowl of bubur ayam was just what we needed. The warm, savory porridge was like a hug in a bowl, and we eagerly dug in. But that’s when the bubur ayam debate began.

You see, I'm firmly on Team Diaduk—a true believer in the art of mixing everything together. To me, the beauty of bubur ayam lies in the harmonious blend of chicken, broth, sambal, and crunchy toppings. Each bite should be a perfect fusion of flavors, like a culinary symphony. Stirring? Absolutely necessary.

My friend, however, was adamantly against it. “You can’t stir bubur!” they exclaimed with the seriousness of a monk guarding sacred text. “The chicken, the shallots, the sambal... each component has its place in the bowl, and you must respect that. Stirring is an insult to the ingredients.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re telling me you’re going to eat all those separate layers one by one? Like some sort of porridge purist?”

My friend nodded gravely, clearly ready to die on this hill. “It’s about the experience,” they said. “Each spoonful is a carefully crafted masterpiece.”

We took our first bites. My friend, true to their word, carefully avoided mixing, while I dove right in, stirring like there was no tomorrow. To my surprise, both approaches had their merits. The un-stirred bowl was like a delicate dance of textures—each bite a little different, a little surprising. But my stirred bowl? Pure, chaotic comfort. All the flavors came together in one glorious, satisfying mash.

After breakfast, my friend decided to head toward Denpasar, and she celebrated her birthday by completing 60km on her route while I carried on solo to complete my own 100 km. Reaching Kerobokan at the halfway mark (50 km) around 8:41 AM, I started feeling the weight of the ride. The heat was creeping in, and I knew it would only get tougher from there. The climbs ahead weren’t steep, but they were enough to slow me down, each one taking a little more energy.

From Kerobokan to Sempidi (60 km, 9:10 AM) and then on to Batu Bulan at 70 km (9:42 AM), it felt like a grind. I was tired, and every pedal stroke felt heavier. By the time I hit Guwang at 80 km around 10:00 AM, I was seriously questioning how much longer I could keep this pace. At Ahmad Yani, reaching the 90 km mark by 10:25 AM, I took a break for an ice-cold cendol, which felt like a lifesaver. That little burst of sugar and the cold drink were enough to keep me going, knowing I was in the final stretch.

Rolling into Renon at the 100 km finish line by 11:00 AM felt surreal. This ride had been a whole new level of hard, especially with the heat. It tested my endurance, both mentally and physically. But there’s something about having a friend along, even for part of the journey, that makes these grueling rides feel lighter. Knowing that I pushed through to the end was satisfying in itself.

Lately, exercise habits have been on the rise. Gen Z even jokes about people “ unexpectedly becoming athletes,” or “tiba-tiba jadi athlete,” often linked to someone who’s just gone through a breakup and dives headfirst into sports as a coping mechanism. But it’s not always about heartbreak; sometimes, it’s simply about wanting to lead healthier lives.

It’s also the time when many of our peers are getting engaged or married. Social media feeds are flooded with engagement announcements, wedding photos, or honeymoon snapshots. 

As we reach our late 20s and early 30s, many of us find ourselves at a crossroads, either settling down in a committed relationship or intensifying our involvement in sports, like running, cycling, tennis, yoga, hiking, or pilates. This trend reflects a broader search for meaning, stability, and personal fulfillment.

Two Paths to Fulfillment

At this stage, personal fulfillment is something we all crave. For some, marriage represents a deep commitment and the start of a shared life journey with a partner. For others, sports provide a sense of accomplishment and self-improvement. Both paths offer different, equally valuable growth and satisfaction.

Societal expectations often nudge us in these directions. The pressure to “settle down” can push some toward marriage, while others might seek the structured goals and benefits that come with sports. Both choices are shaped by the social circles we move in and the milestones we’re encouraged to reach.

Marriage often symbolizes creating a foundation for life—a sense of security and the start of a family. This aligns with both personal and societal goals of building a stable future. Conversely, sports are a foundation for individual health, achievement, and discipline. Both are vital, but in different aspects—one in relationships, the other in personal goals.

Some people, like my friend (dr. Nada), believe we can balance both. She’s a Javanese girl, eager to get married but passionate about maintaining her exercise habits. She says, “If marriage and exercise can go hand in hand, why not? What gave me the courage to move forward with marriage was that my future husband supports my dreams. He doesn’t mind if I want to work in a clinic, hospital, or academic as long as I’m happy. He even encourages me not to work too hard so I can have time for the gym, exercise, or just me-time. The key is to marry someone who’s willing to compromise. Don’t settle for less.”

Her perspective highlights the importance of finding a partner who supports your dreams and values your happiness.

With all these choices in front of us, it’s natural to wonder: are we on the right path? The truth is, there’s no universal answer. The “right path” is the one that aligns with your personal goals, values, and the kind of life you want to build. Whether focusing on marriage, sports, or finding a balance between the two, the most important thing is making choices that feel true to you.

It’s easy to get caught up in societal pressures or the expectations of others, but ultimately, your path should be about what makes you feel fulfilled and happy. If you’re questioning your direction, take a step back and consider what you want out of life. Are your choices bringing you closer to your goals or leading you away? Reflecting on these questions can help ensure that you’re on a path that’s right for you.

Haiii...Taking on a gran fondo has always been on my bucket list, so when I finally decided to do it, I was both excited and a bit nervous. For those who might not know, a gran fondo is a long-distance ride, usually 100 km or more. It’s a big deal for cyclists, mixing endurance with the thrill of exploring new routes. Starting from Sanur at 5:30 PM, I set out on a 100 km journey that would take me through Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua, Sunset Road, Kerobokan, and beyond. I finished the ride back to Sanur around 10:00 PM, tired but thrilled with the accomplishment.

The first leg of the journey, from Sanur to Tanjung Benoa, was a solid warm-up. I felt good hitting the 30 km mark as I passed through Nusa Dua at 40 km. The roads were familiar, but with each pedal stroke, the distance challenge was always in the back of my mind.

As I reached Sunset Road at 60 km, I could feel the fatigue setting in. At that point, you start to question why you’re doing this, but the answer comes when you push through and keep going. Hitting Kerobokan at 70 km was a bit of a mental boost—familiar ground that made the effort feel more manageable.

Covering long distances required not just physical strength but also mental toughness. Each kilometer pushed me to stay focused and keep a steady pace, reminding me of the importance of endurance in cycling.

From there, it was on to Gatot Subroto and Batubulan, reaching 80 km. The night was closing in, and while the streets were quieter, my legs felt the burn. Ketewel came next at 90 km, and I was running on pure determination by then.

Finally, returning to Sanur at 100 km was a mix of exhaustion and pride. I’d done it—my first gran fondo was in the bag. It wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it.

For me, endurance is crucial in cycling because it allows you to maintain energy and power over extended periods. It’s not just about speed, it’s about sustaining your efforts, especially on challenging rides like fondos. Building endurance helps you tackle longer distances, climb steep hills, and ride through fatigue, making you a more resilient and capable cyclist.

It’s essential for anyone who wants to enjoy longer rides, explore new routes, and improve overall fitness. It’s about finding the strength to keep going, even when the road gets tough. This gran fondo was a clear reminder of how vital endurance is, and it’s something I’ll continue to work on in my cycling journey.

Haii, we meet again. Beyond my daily rides to work, I’ve recently taken on some longer rides that have not only tested my endurance but have also allowed me to enjoy the diverse scenery of the island. Here’s a glimpse into my journeys from Sanur to various destinations, each with its own unique charm. Btw, I call my bike "Gian".

This workout adventure began with no specific route—just a desire to see how far I could go on my bike. I set off from Kerobokan at 6:50 AM, excited to discover what lay ahead. After some pedaling, I realized I could reach Sibang, covering a distance of 40.27 km.

My ride started by heading towards Gatot Subroto, and then I continued to climb through Penatih. As I entered Penatih, the road began to rise, presenting my first real challenge of the day. This was my first time exploring this area, so I followed the road as it stretched.

Eventually, I arrived at the Sibang Gede highway, where I found a jogging track. It was the perfect spot for a break, so I stopped and took in the surroundings. Unfortunately, the night before, it had rained, leaving the ground slippery. While navigating the jogging track, I experienced a minor mishap and slipped off my bike. Thankfully, I was unharmed and ready to continue my journey.

After enjoying the moment, I began my return trip, descending through Batubulan and heading towards Renon. When I reached Renon, I took a well-deserved break for breakfast before returning to Kerobokan.

Overall, this ride was both enjoyable and refreshing. The cool air energized me, and the route wasn’t overly challenging regarding elevation. I also managed to save 8.76 kg of carbon during this workout.

Haiii...I had no idea how transformative the decision would be when I started cycling to work in April. The journey has been exhilarating, from my initial commute between Kerobokan and Sanur to my current route from Renon to Sanur. Here's a glimpse into my cycling adventure. And the incredible benefits I've experienced along the way.

It all started in April when I decided to swap my motorcycle keys for a bike helmet. Living in Kerobokan and working in Sanur meant a daily commute of about 12 kilometers. It was a challenge at first. I discovered the rhythm of morning traffic and the serenity of early dawn as I navigated the busy streets of Bali.

The physical effort was noticeable, but so were the rewards. I quickly realized how much more connected I felt to my surroundings. My daily motivation became the fresh morning air and the sight of the sun rising over the island. My cycling data showed that speed and endurance continued to improve, which was incredibly satisfying.

In May, I moved to Renon, which brought with it a new route and new experiences. The commute from Renon to Sanur is slightly shorter, about 9 kilometers each way, but no less rewarding. This route has allowed me to explore different parts of the island. It has brought new challenges and scenery.

One of the best things about my new route is that it is close to the beach. After a day in the office, I now have the luxury of taking a detour along the coast. There's something magical about watching the sunset over the sea after a day's work. It's the perfect way to recharge and reflect on the day.

Each component is executed with precision, resulting in a dish that is both satisfying and comforting. Whether enjoyed as a light meal or a hearty snack, Sakedon offers a taste of Japan's culinary excellence in every bite.

The Zest Blackbird is no ordinary coffee latte. Crafted with a blend of espressos from Brazil Mogiana and Colombia Popayan, this unique coffee creation is a must-try.
